Poland-born, San Francisco-based director, animator, and dark dreamer Grzegorz Jonkajtys‘ work inhabits a expansive universe. His animated short film “Ark” isn’t afraid to be bleak, embracing the futuristic vision of sci-fi but blending it with stark reality that makes it easy to imagine coming true. Technically, it’s a brilliant blend of real-life miniatures and CGI, but like the best art, he’s created a world so vivid and engaging that you never stop to think about how it was done until you’ve watched it a few times and absorbed its magic.
“Ark” was nominated for a Golden Palm at Cannes 2007 and winner of Siggraph 2007 “Best In Show”. Motionographer also pointed me to an amazing interview at FX Guide filled with behind the scenes goodness.
