mathmos thaw.

Designed by Mathew Jackson for legendary lighting innovators Mathmos – inventors of the lava lamp – the thaw is a little nature paradox brought to design life (insert fire and ice joke here…). You create the icy cylinder from the included mold. The tealight inside glows while the ice is thick and as it melts slats in the holder collect the water.

gimme gimme: acme made + paul smith

For those of you who are just getting to know me, I’ll reiterate that – much like a toddler or a magpie – I’m fanatically drawn to design that features recurring patterns of bright colours. So it’s no big shocker then that one of my all-time fave designers is Paul Smith. He almost universally slaps those perfectly placed lines of juicy colour on every damn thing he makes. And for that I’m eternally grateful.

This new laptop bag is a collab between Sir Paul and utility meets function experts Acme Made. Their website goes on about functionality and textiles and blah blah blah. It’s got Paul Smith stripes and it’s groovy and you’ll look better than everyone else when you carry it. That’s all you need to know.

fernando brizio: somewhere over the rainbowl

Resistance is futile. When I die I want to be cremated and have my ashes buried in this vase.

‘Painting with Giotto #1’ by Fernando Brizio

The chromatic patterns in this piece by Portugese artist Fernando Brizio were created by embedding a bunch of felt-tipped markers into the lip of the vase. As the multi-hued inks leak into the porous ceramic, they bleed together and create an absolutely unique piece. He only produced 20 of these little beauties, and the price on his site is listed as “price on demand”. Which, translated into layman’s terms, means “don’t even think about it, po’ boy”.
