delphic + andy huang: doubt.

I love the artistic study of the collision between the digital and organic, and the idea of a point where our physical evolution meets mutation and takes a shocking genetic leap forward. I’m drawn to depictions of that intersection where our microchips merge with our bodies, and how we’re forced to consider how the rest of us may react when the first of us transcend the boundary of the human and the mechanical and transform into an unimaginable new hybrid.

The new video for amazing alt-electronic outfit Delphic’s “Doubt” is a stunning physical metaphor for emotional mutation. Their faces and bodies crystalize, galvanize, and alchemize themselves against their emotional trauma and manifest into a physical protection for, and even aggression against, their new emotional world. Like second skins, metallic armours and cellular defenses slowly spread across their bodies.

Reminding me of the amazing genetic mutational imaginings of Lucyandbart, the vid is directed by another artist with experience in visualizing the future.I first discovered Andy Huang over two years ago with his spectacular short film “Doll Face”, a story of robotic narcissism that has to be seen to be believed, which he followed up with his sinister and disturbing “The Gloaming.

andy huang: the gloaming.

Here’s proof positive that nobody should work alone in a cubicle after dark. Tell your bosses. I first discovered Andy Huang with his extraordinary animated short “Doll Face.” He continues his ridiculously good mix of live action and animation with his tingly, night-drenched, monitor-lit “The Gloaming.”

As with any good film-maker or animator, technical proficiency isn’t enough. The best animator in the world could produce bullshit work if they don’t know how to use those skills to make us feel something. Huang’s stuff always strikes me emotionally – while the work itself seems effortless – and that’s what really matters.

You should really watch the glorious HD version of “The Gloaming” right here, but there’s also a mediocre-quality YouTube version for you impatient types:

Wow. Wow. Wow.

At only 22, artist and animator Andy Huang‘s work has already been shown at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. Completed in 2005, “Doll Face” is the worthy recipient of several accolades, including being an Official Selection at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in France and at the Electronic Theater at Siggraph 2006 in Boston. Watching the short, it’s not hard to see why it’s received so much love…

Besides just the timeless and universal look at narcissism and the quest for beauty, the mix between animation and live action here is flawless. I can’t stop watching it. Andy’s now working for Root Films in LA, where you can check out his most recent work. I might also be partial to “Doll Face” because it’s got a similar vibe to one of my favourite music videos, Björk and Chris Cunningham’s freakishly good lesbo-robotic “All Is Full Of Love”:
