paul robertson: hyper parsnip bitches.

Paul Robertson is one of those really exciting artists who’s either a total genius or completely fucking nuts. Either way, his work is beyond interesting. They are complete 8-bit arcade-inspired Japanimation pop culture mash-ups, featuring more rainbows, guns, blood, breasts, and things flying through the air then you can imagine. This is one of his earlier vids, 2001’s “Hyper Parsnip Bitches.” The title alone is worth the price of admission.

I’m not really sure how to describe this. It’s pretty much beyond description. That’s just how far beyond far this has gone.

Robertson describes it as “a short film parodying 2D side scrolling videogames, among other things!” I feel like now is the right time to tell you what one of those other things is. I have one word for you: Falcor. That’s right. Muthafucking Falcor is in this vid. And if you don’t know who Falcor is then I have nothing else to say to you.

paul robertson: kings of power 4 billion %.

So… wow.

After watching this I had to take a moment to figure out if I was on drugs. I’m not, but it made me feel like I was. If you are on drugs, then watching this could make your brain explode. Explode with rainbow MegaMan anime goodness, but explode nonetheless. I don’t guarantee anything.

Paul Robertson has given us everything with “Kings Of Power 4 Billion %.” We’ve got trance-inducing electro-pop Mortal Kombat soundtrack. We’ve got 8-bit throwback goodness. We’ve got disproportionately large-breasted mini Manga-babes. We’ve got intergalactic body-morphing child soldiers. We’ve got panda bear suits. We’ve got world leaders hung on a gigantic floating crucifix. We’ve got blood, sweat, tears, and toil… pixellated! Cities rise, cities fall, heroes are crowned, babies are breastfed, and a murderous monster-Jesus is resurrected to detroy us all. It’s a motherfucking epic.

Plus, you have to proove your age just to watch this shit. That’s how good it is. It’s so good it’s willing to discriminate. It doesn’t give a fuck if you’re too young.

murakami’s “my lonesome cowboy” = $15 million.

Takashi Murakami is a genius. Not only that, his career, in every conceivable definition, is totally on fire right now. Genius and mega-popularity outside the art world don’t always run hand in hand, but Murakami is hitting all the right touchpoints with demographics that might not normally be exposed to his work.

Newly introduced to a whole new world of fans through his work with Kanye West and Louis Vuitton, and recently celebrated by fans new and old at his recent MOCA exhibit and his current solo show at Blum & Poe in LA, Murakami is universally hailed and loved to death by art critics and hipsters and everyone in between. He can pretty much do no wrong.

And when you can do no wrong, your life-sized sculpture of a bright-eyed anime manga-boy jerking off and whipping his jizz into a gigantic lasso around his head will sell at auction for $13.5 million US. Two nights ago at Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening, “My Lonesome Cowboy”, estimated to go for $3-$4 million, surpassed expectations and ended up with a $13.5 million closing bid. Add in the 11% house commission and you’ve got yourself a world-famous Murakami for a cool $15.161 million. The only question that remains… where to put it?

Not like you needed further proof, but Murakami proved just how rad he is again during his MOCA exhibition in LA. When a huge Murakami billboard on Melrose Avenue was elaborately painted on by artists Auger/Revok, it was soon taken down. But not for the negative reasons you might think. Murakami himself had seen pics of the billboard online and loved it so much he wanted it for his own personal collection. And when you’re Murakami, that means the billboard gets dismantled and shipped to you…in Japan. Awesome.

If you want to see one of the raddest music videos ever, click below. It’s “Dangerseekers” by Kap10kurt, and the vid was directed by collective The Holograms and produced by one of my fave houses, Paris-based motion design studio Mathematic. Big.

It’s like Tron + Astroboy + greasy scenesters + Knight Rider + Transformers + Guitar Hero + The Matrix + Roberto Cavalli. Don’t ask me how it’s all those things, it just freaking is. Watch it. Now.
