fueltv + golden lucky: looking thru the b sides.

I read that people went apeshit when “Looking Thru The B Sides” went up at Pictoplasma NYC. The trailer makes it pretty clear why. Commissioned by Fuel TV, director Saimon Chow at Golden Lucky was given the breifs to thrill and inspire action sports lovers with a visually-crazy short film. Mission accomplished. The result is an 8-minute multi-styled cartoon epic about a skater named Ollie.

Complete with soundtrack by one of my favourite sound designers, the kick ass Simon Pyke at Freeform, if the insanely hype full trailer below isn’t enough for you, then you can also check out the 15 sec teaser here, the 20 sec teaser here, and a totally weird French-puppet promo spot that makes no sense here.

The trailer alone has be fully pumped. The full short isn’t available online yet, so be sure to check out local film fests and animation conferences to see if you can be lucky enough to see it on a big screen.

There are days, usually Mondays like today, where I’m pretty sure we’ve all felt the desire to just sprout wings and fly away. Apparently Dutch animator and designer Jeff Metz feels the same way… and in his animated short “Final”, despite the lack of colour, he brings the feeling itself vividly to life.

mtv switch: “3650”.

MTV’s Public Service Announcements (PSAs) are always beyond kick ass. They find the ideal blend of visual style, music, genuine emotion, and entertainment that all companies should aspire to when trying to hit home with the much sought after 16-30s. From their mind-blowing (literally) HIV/AIDS awareness ad “Shot” to the shocking realism and quiet truth of MTV Think’s “Subway” and “Family Room”, they consistently get it bang on. The mix of message, meaning, and art is unstoppable.

This spot, directed by duo Ubik for MTV’s environmental awareness campaign – MTV Switch – is pure win. The animation is sharp and eye-catching, and rather than ramming some bombastic message into our faces it’s just simple and lovely and allows us to make its emotional feeling our own emotional feeling. This is an ad you can embrace. Love love love it. Ubik won “Best Animation” at the BTAA Craft Awards for this and were just nominated for “Best Film and TV Graphics” at the British Animation Awards. They deserve it big time.

zürich chamber orchestra: “rollercoaster”.

True, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen the whole visual design gives you a rollercoaster ride POV thing, but this is the first time I’ve seen it done so elegantly and in perfect sync with the soundtrack. Excellent work for the Zürich Chamber Orchestra, and an eye-catching way to attract a younger demographic to classical music.

Adidas is the shit. That’s all there is to it.

I’ve talked about my love for Adidas before. Proof that my brand loyalty is well-placed can be found in this a-may-zing new video they’ve created, which tells the story of the company through the eyes and story of it’s brainstorming founder, Adi Dassler. Combining stop-motion, digital animation, live action, vintage news clips, and other film techniques, this vid is literally not like anything you’ve seen before. As a sneaker freaker, I had a very emotional reaction to Adi’s story – I almost teared up. I’m naming my first born Adidas…
