ubik: voxel.

I’ve been a big time fan of Not To Scale’s London-based directing duo Ubik since  their insanely, perfectly, understatedly bang on video for MTV Switch, “3650.” They were recently invited to create a short for the Holy Grail of animation conferences (and the place I’d like my cremains spread when I die, that’s how awesome it is…) Motionographer’s F5. Working without a traditional brief,  but instead from the reference words “refresh, renewal, rejeuvenation”, Ubik created “Voxel”.

Opening inside an empty swimming pool, the short ripples open as pixellated, organic masses shapeshift and morph until they eventually overtake the man-made pool with their own aquatic world. It’s digital-organic and a crazy study in opposities: the pixel water seems hard yet falls from the sky with an exquisite softness, and coral, though pixellated, slowly blooms as open and free as the space it’s encompassing. It’s absolutely kick ass…
