michel gondry + leos carax + bong joon-ho: tokyo!

There is too much goodness here going on for me to handle. I would see anything Michel Gondry touches, because I basically worship him, but add in Leos Carax and Bong Joon-ho and this just totally blows me away.

The film’s site hands over one of the greatest film synposes of all time:

“In ‘TOKYO!’, three of the world’s greatest filmmakers come together for an omnibus triptych examining the nature of one unforgettable city as it’s shaped by the disparate people who work, live (and even run amok!) inside one enormous, constantly evolving, densely populated Japanese megalopolis – the ravishing and inimitable Tokyo. Triptych, rhapsody, psychogeography, urban valentine, freak show, mindwalk and many other things, ‘TOKYO!’ is a fantasy in three movements that will make you see one of the world’s greatest cities – if not any cities – in unpredictable new ways.”

Holy shit. You can’t tell me you don’t want to see this.

michel gondry + dick annegarn: soleil du soir.

Michel Gondry is a bit of a freaky genius and I worship him. Although I don’t love this video as much as his other stuff, it’s still worth a look and some pretty rad time lapse work. Gondry never does anything “bad”, it’s all just shades of awesome. I’m sure if you’re French the song itself might not be so horrendously annoying. It sounds a lot like a French Randy Newman to me, and headache-inducingly so, but props to singer/songwriter Dick Annegarn for getting Gondry to direct a video for him.

declare independence: björk + michel gondry

Most people think Björk is bat shit crazy. I’m not here to either dispute or confirm that. Personally, I’ve had a soft spot in my heart for her ever since I fell in love with Post. Anyone who tries to claim they weren’t even a little moved by the soul-wrenching performance she surprised everyone with in Dancer In The Dark is just being an asshole.

Like her or hate her, she’s undeniably on the forefront of all things artistic: beats, live performance, digital instrumentation (check out The Reactable that she blew people’s minds with on her 2007 tour), and definitely videos. Her visual interpretations of her songs are just as undeniably unique and uncompromising as the music itself. This is in no small part to her long artistic mind-melding with French director Michel Gondry. Which would help explain why a lot of her videos are like 4-minute dream sequences that Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind left on the cutting room floor.

This much-heralded collab continues with the latest single from Volta. I like this video, but I don’t love it. But, as with all things Björk, it’s most definitely worth talking about:
