emmett feldman + mekanism: cat conference opener.

Mekanism’s lead motion graphics editor Emmet Feldman drove the creation of this kick ass opening vid for Creativity’s upcoming inaugural Creativity and Technology (CaT) conference this Wednesday in NYC. It’s organic, prismatic, glassy, and digital and definitely gets my creative juices on the move.

blink + tomas mankovsky: sorry I’m late.

I see some people bitching online about how many stop motion videos there are and I think they should shut up. Sure, the whole stop motion thing has been really popular lately, and I think it’s for two reasons:

a) If done well, it’s really fucking awesome. b) It can be cheap, and is an amazing technique for low-budget or up-and-coming artists to create cool motion design.

sorry-im-late-600x335

Plus, if you’ve ever seen how gruelingly, excrutiatingly, painfully long it takes to create, it’s amazing how much love has to be put into it. As long as it’s being used to create something true and beautiful, it shouldn’t matter how many times you’ve seen it before. That would be like saying Impressionism is played out because Manet did it all before Monet. And, if you said that, you’d be an idiot.

There’s always room for more of something awesome.

Besides just being generally hot, “Sorry I’m Late” is even more impressive when you realize that Blink’s Tomas Mankovsky created it with stop motion, shooting a bunch of stills on a gym floor from a camera suspended from the ceiling. That, my friends, is bad ass. No matter how many times you’ve seen it.

ross ching + death cab for cutie: little bribes.

First and foremost I’m a writer, so I always love it when the power of simple text gets used visually. But I’m also a design geek, so when that text is lovingly mutated and brought alive in gorgeous ways, the whole thing is win win.

Recent San Diego State film grad Ross Ching took two weeks to create this fan vid for Death Cab For Cutie’s “Little Bribes.”

All good things travel around from somewhere, and Ching’s vid seems inspired by (or came from the same place of inspiration as) a vid from one of my fave directors on the planet, Australian Kris Moyes. He created this genius bit of stop motion kick ass for Softlightes’ “Heart Made Of Sound.”

In case you missed it, a few years ago Moyes dreamed up one of my fave videos of all time, again for Softlightes, but for “The Microwave Song.” It’s one of the best things ever, and if you think I wasn’t being serious before about respecting the ways artists can be inspired by others, I have a feeling Moyes’ “The Microwave Song” vid was at least a little bit imagined thanks to this clip.

panda transport: transmission

Anything, as long as it’s done earnestly, can be beautiful. Tealights and watercolours imbue Panda Transport’s self made video for “Transmission” with a quiet, simple importance that doesn’t trumpet its arrival. It just appears as if it’s always been there…

tea&cheese: 8-bit waterslide.

Oh, 8-bit retrogame-inspired stop motion goodness, how I love thee. Let me count the ways…

This is Tea&Cheese’s entry into the Barclaycard waterslide film competition (following up on the popularity of their TV spot, “Waterslide”, which I posted about when it was released). If you love “8-bit waterslide” (and I did) then you can vote for it here (and I did).

yann deval + pornophonic orchestra: dimanche après-midi.

A lamp, a camera, and a vintage Scrabble board is all it took for director and animator Yann Deval to create this angsty stop motion vid for Pornophonic Orchestra’s “Dimanche après-midi” (…that’s Sunday Afternoon).

jason rosenberg + jon barth: behind closed drawers.

It takes balls to be totally random, but this brings random to a whole new level. Directors Jason Rosenberg and Jon Barth describe the plot: “A love triangle between common kitchen utensils yields an epic tale of life and death. Told through the magical world of stop go animation.” Epic indeed. If you’ve ever wanted to see a stop-motion plasticine utensil climax that re-tells the beginning of  “The Lion King”, complete with an 8-bit “Circle of Life” soundtrack and herds of wild bottle openers migrating across the kitchen floor, then today is your lucky day…

nicolas ménard: rockman 9.

Wiis are awesome, and I’m sure it’s only a matter of time until full virtual-reality cyber-suit psycho-gaming becomes a reality, but there’s something about the charm of an old skool 8-bit game that just isn’t going to die. When we look back on the rise of the digital age, from the future, these little babies are going to be the writing on the cave wall. A purity of enjoyment when the very fact that it was happening at all was excitement enough for all involved.

rockman

Nicolas Ménard understand the throwback charm of a simpler time. His new short – portraying Rockman’s (a.k.a. Megaman) epic battle in with nothing more than construction paper, marker, sneakers,  forks, cracker boxes, and good ol’ stop motion – is a cool ass little ode to a classic, told in a classic film medium.

beck + kris moyes: youthless.

No matter how advanced CGI gets, there’s always going to be something undeniably awesome about good ol’ stop-motion. When done well, it’s less craft corner and more pure win. Director Kris Moyes knew how to strike the perfect balance of schtick, timing, cardboard, and handpuppets in his stellar video for the one-and-only Beck’s single “Youthless.” Crazy.

Check out a great interview with Moyes at Pedestrian.TV.

jemapur + max hattler: aanaatt.

Japanese electropoppers Jempaur are at it again with the crazy stop-motion vid for “AANAATT”. They can’t release a bad video lately. Especially with masterminds like German director Max Hattler in charge…
