michel gondry + leos carax + bong joon-ho: tokyo!

There is too much goodness here going on for me to handle. I would see anything Michel Gondry touches, because I basically worship him, but add in Leos Carax and Bong Joon-ho and this just totally blows me away.

The film’s site hands over one of the greatest film synposes of all time:

“In ‘TOKYO!’, three of the world’s greatest filmmakers come together for an omnibus triptych examining the nature of one unforgettable city as it’s shaped by the disparate people who work, live (and even run amok!) inside one enormous, constantly evolving, densely populated Japanese megalopolis – the ravishing and inimitable Tokyo. Triptych, rhapsody, psychogeography, urban valentine, freak show, mindwalk and many other things, ‘TOKYO!’ is a fantasy in three movements that will make you see one of the world’s greatest cities – if not any cities – in unpredictable new ways.”

Holy shit. You can’t tell me you don’t want to see this.

jemapur + kosai sekine: maledict car.

Director Kosai Sekine and W+KTokyoLab created this slick new video for Japanese electrogroup Jemapur’s new single “Maledict Car”. There’s something very slow and dreamy and urban about the whole thing, with that sort of “all who wander are not lost” rambling feeling everything relating to Tokyo seems to have.

This vid reminds me of one of my favourite books of all time, the brilliant David Mitchell’s “Number 9 Dream“. If that book was movie, this would be it’s soundtrack.

marti guixé: candy restaurant.

Only in Japan do things like this happen. You might remember Dutch artist Marti Guixé for his Gin and Tonic Fog Party. Well, Marti is my kinda guy; having given the world breathable cocktails, he’s now moved on to gourment dining… with gummies.

The Candy Restaurant opened in Tokyo in 2007. A lot like good sushi, you’ve got 4 different tasting menus to serve from. The candies come served quite artistically on a plate, with instructions on how to eat them (make sure you always eat a Fuzzy Peach with the the stem side facing your tongue…)
