douglas coupland + crush: generation a.

Douglas Coupland is a genius. I’ve read everything he’s ever published, and he was one of the first authors who transitioned me from a sort of education-based reading automaton to an actual passion for how pop culture, modernity, and the beauty of everyday details can me imbued into writing. I love this man with all my heart.

As a promo for his latest novel, “Generation A”, his upcoming sequel to his groundbreaking novel “Generation X”, Toronto’s own Crush delved into Coupland’s chaotic, eccentric, frenetic, brilliant mind. A pseudo-interview; they’ve evolved it to the next level by interspersing it with imagery and dialogue from “Generation A”, elements of which I don’t think will make total sense without reading the book. It’s like a short film/advertisement/pop art/literary study. It’s functioning on so many levels it makes me giddy.

Marry me, Douglas Coupland.

terri timely + st. vincent: marrow.

I first started following directing duo Terri Timely after their insane video “Synesthesia”, easily one of my top ten for 2009.

And since brilliant musicians look to work with brilliant directors, they were tapped by St. Vincent to create this awesome vid for “Marrow.” Watch and behold:

blu + david ellis: combo.

Argentine street artist Blu made huge waves on the net a while ago with his incredible street art/stop motion vido “Muto.”

His latest is a collaborative piece with David Ellis. It looks like this would take forever. Even if it’s not your aesthetic, you can’t help but be blown away by the intensity of the process…

siggi eggertsson: a growing pile of work.

Following up on the radness that was “Supernova”, yesterday Siggi Eggertsson released “A Growing Pile Of Work”, a stellar vid made by using After Effects to piece together more than 400 images Eggertsson created between 2003 and 2009.

salazar + brasstronaut: old world lies.

The sea is instantaneously epic. It feels like every journey begins and ends there; our evolution, our migrations, our imaginations. So many great journeys bourne on the waves…

Like the ocean itself, this video heaves. Reminiscent at times of glimpses from Benh Zeitlin’s “Glory At Sea”, Vancouver-based motion picture collective  Salazar created this windy, worldly, weary, wavey and completely incredible video for Brasstronaut’s “Old Word Lies.”

grizzly bear + grandchildren: while you wait for the others.

Grizzly Bear can do no wrong. I was lucky enough to see them live twice this summer, and both times they killed it. Words don’t do them justice.

Teaming up with Grandchildren (a.k.a. Sean Pecknold), Grizzly Bear’s latest video for “While You Wait For The Others” is basically a tour de force of influenced yet evolved images. It harkens backward while also breaking forward and just basically kicking ass. Pecknold is the brother of Fleet Foxes’ lead singer Robin Pecknold, and (amongst a whole host of great work) they’ve knocked it out of the park thrice before with three amazing vids for Fleet Foxes: “White Winter Hymnal”, “Mykonos”, and “He Doesn’t Know Why.” The WWH video is one of my total favourites of last year…

Thanks to Kateopolis for the tip.

bonsaininja + fare soldi: survivor.

Never heard of Italian disco-house? Well you have now.

Fare Soldi pushes the boundaries of gino funk with “Survivor”, delivering it with an incredible video by Bonsaininja. I don’t get tired of this whole retro, laser-filled, everything from the 80s is floating in space vibe. It looks like every image in here was pulled off the side of a plastic lunch box.

yusuke nagano + little dragon: swimming.

Swedish electro outfit Little Dragon’s lead singer, Yukumi Nagano, is Swedish and Japanese, which basically makes her the coolest person ever. As if taking the world’s two super-cultures and putting them together wasn’t enough prook, the vid for “Swimming” was illustrated by Yukimi’s father, Yusuke Nagano.

I need to have dinner with these people. I need them to adopt me…

fuck buttons: surf solar.

Fuck I love Fuck Buttons. Their latest, “Surf Solar”, is big. B. I. G. It makes me want to run. Or jump off something. I felt it inside my ribcage.

Directed by Andy Hung (one half of Fuck Buttons, along with Benjamin John Power), this is the first track off “Tarot Sport”, which drops on Sept. 14. That’s in 4 days. Followed by a massive tour that’s making a stop in Toronto on Nov. 23. Time to shit my pants…

If you’re into this (and why wouldn’t you be…) check out two other past must-see Fuck Buttons gems (and my two personal favourites) “Bright Tomorrow” and “Colours Move.”

makoto yabuki: white box.

I discovered Makoto Yabuki’s “White Box” through two very reliable sources: my boy HXFOUR sent it to me and I also saw it on Kateopolis’ epic Vimeo Channel.

This is like a visual toy box of everything I love: spontaneous colour, pencil crayons, bird song, clean white rooms, and anything to do with Japan.
